Safeguarding ecosystems, territories, and rights
Across tropical forest landscapes, deforestation, extractive activities, land grabbing, wildfires, and encroachment increasingly threaten ecosystems and community territories. These pressures undermine land rights, weaken local governance, and erode the integrity of entire landscapes.
At Aktion Amazonas, we work with Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities to strengthen territorial protection through community-based monitoring, wildfire preparedness, and local leadership - combining technology, practical capacity, and stronger community institutions to prevent and respond to threats.
We support Indigenous Peoples and local communities in establishing surveillance teams that monitor their territories using GPS, drones, and standardised tools.
Patrols detect and document environmental crimes such as illegal logging, mining, and land encroachment - generating verifiable evidence and enabling authorities to act.
We strengthen wildfire preparedness through participatory risk mapping, early warning systems, and community fire brigades trained in prevention, response, and recovery. Practical measures such as firebreaks and local water reservoirs reduce vulnerability and enhance landscape resilience under increasing climate pressure.
We strengthen Indigenous and local leadership through training, peer learning, and support to community organisations, enabling communities to defend their rights, influence decisions, and protect their territories.
