Who is Aktion Amazonas?

ABOUT US

Aktion Amazonas is a Danish non-profit and member-based nature conservation NGO founded in 2014.

We work to conserve South America's unique and globally significant forest ecosystems based in the Amazon and adjacent forest ecosystems. In Denmark and the European Union, we advocate for measures to reduce pressure on tropical forests.

To date, at least 40,000 plant species, 427 mammals (e.g., jaguar, anteater, and giant otter), 1,300 birds (e.g., harpy eagle, toucan, and hoatzin), 378 reptiles (e.g., boa), more than 400 amphibians (e.g., dart poison frog), and around 3,000 freshwater fishes, including the piranha, have been found in the Amazon.

Forest protection benefits biodiversity, helps slow the rate of climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it, and ensures local communities' access to essential ecosystem services such as drinking water.

AKAM is currently committed to conserving more than 7 million hectares of forest in Bolivia and Peru in partnerships with local nature conservation organizations and in close coordination and cooperation with local actors.

We are a member and co-founder of the South American Forest Conservation Alliance (SAFCA) with a vision to sustainably preserve South America's tropical forest ecosystems for the benefit of biodiversity, people and the climate.

Underpinned by scientific research, the alliance collaborates to strengthen community-driven forest conservation and exert political influence on governments to halt deforestation.

SAFCA’s long-term goal is to strengthen ecological integrity and secure natural connections and interactions across landscapes in the Amazon rainforest and the Chiquitano dry forest.

Annual Report 2024

Annual Report 2023

Aktion Amazonas actively works with several of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals through our efforts in nature conservation in South America, raising awareness in Denmark, and influencing EU political decisions relevant to tropical forests, to name a few of the areas of focus related to, among others, Goal 13 (Climate Action) and Goal 15 (Life on Land).

Internally, efforts to contribute to a sustainable world have also made an impact on the organization, where Aktion Amazonas develops both gender policies, a manual for the prevention of sexual misconduct, and anti-corruption policies.

As a nature organization with a clear green profile, we naturally work with the 'green' Sustainable Development Goals, aimed at ensuring a better climate and sustainable, resilient ecosystems with rich biodiversity.

How we work

In South America, we work to strengthen the conservation capacities and rights of indigenous peoples and local forest communities, support the establishment and management of protected areas, and ultimately create nature corridors by connecting productive landscapes with indigenous territories, national parks, and other protected areas. Our primary focus is on indigenous territories, as more than a third of the world's remaining pristine forests, known as intact forest landscapes, are found in areas either managed or owned by indigenous people.

Our work is based on four mutually dependent strategic initiatives and underpinned by scientific research:

  • Climate Change Adaptation & Ecosystem Management

  • Territorial Governance & New Technologies

  • Enviromental Education & Awareness

  • Wildfire Mitigation & Management

Our scientific research is used to document conservation progress and set priorities, inform on-the-ground actions, and guide work in natural resource management and territorial planning, shape policy and advocacy, enhance understanding of nature while raising awareness of nature conservation. Monitoring nature and collecting information on biodiversity and the overall health of the forests in which we operate are therefore integral components of our international nature conservation efforts.

Values & principles

  • Our work takes place in close collaboration with local communities, authorities, and the private sector in Denmark and South America.

  • To increase the impact of our work, efforts are focused on areas where both the natural values and the threats to them are high.

  • Aktion Amazonas' interventions aim to ensure locally anchored, sustainable, and long-term development and nature conservation.

  • Aktion Amazonas operates through long-term, equitable partnerships. We do not provide North-to-South assistance. Development work is carried out collaboratively. We all work towards preserving global biodiversity, and we can only achieve this goal by involving all competencies and experiences. This approach creates the best synergies, fosters ownership, and contributes to sustainable change.

  • Aktion Amazonas’ core value is professionalism. We can only achieve our mission to save the Amazon by assembling the strongest team. Therefore, a high level of expertise permeates Aktion Amazonas' work, from projects to partners and internally within the organization. We set high standards for both partners, volunteers, and employees. This ensures that, from the outset, we can maintain focus on the issues we aim to address for the benefit of biodiversity, climate, and people.
